Real Options Analysis Framework … Chapter Published & Next Steps

First, we would like to announce that our open-access Springer book chapter, “Real Options Analysis Framework for Comparing Project Configurations,” is now available online, having been published in August. The chapter presents a detailed framework for valuing projects with a high degree of uncertainty, where management has significant flexibility to adjust the project’s course. The framework encompasses various real option types, mechanisms, and locations; project roles and processes; risk scores and failure rates; and a computational model. The chapter applies the framework to two illustrative cases: one agile and the other artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The paper was selected for the book because it was oriented toward a real-world application. Specifically:

The selected papers reflect state-of-the-art research, often oriented toward real-world applications, and highlight the benefits of information systems and technologies for business and public administration—thus forming a bridge between theory and practice.

In June, we presented the framework at the Project Management Institute Asia Pacific conference in Manila. Based on our connection with like-minded professionals, we plan to exchange knowledge and explore strategies, continuing to address some key questions that extend to the use of the real options framework.

This month, we will start discussions around new real option topics; you can find our plans here. The feedback from the PMI conference was that the topic is extremely advanced. Thus, we expect only a few highly qualified experts to join our conversation. As is our usual practice, we plan to make our findings available to the project management community.

We will keep you posted!
